Pop Top 2019
The 2019 Pop Top Open was once again played at the Pinecrest Golf Course in Carolina, RI on September 7. This year’s tournament will also be remembered as the year in which Hurricane Dorian tried to take hold of our tournament but the Golf Gods would not allow it! We had nice golfing conditions with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70’s. We observed a moment of silence for Br Rick Gladney, who passed away last September. Rick was a former RI Beta brother and also a golfer who played in a number of Pop Top Tournaments. We had 31 golfers participating in this year’s event and everyone appeared to have a great time. To add more difficulty to the course once again, the teams hit from the customary white markers on the front 9 but from the blue markers on the back 9 which added an extra 280 yards to the course. For the 6th year in a row, we had a new championship team of Vinny Prattico, John Goodwin, Frank Lee and Pat Clays by carding a minus 5 score. Closest shot to the pin on the 8th hole went to Paul Nasser (5ft) and Jon Bailey had the longest drive on the 3rd hole. It should also be mentioned that John Goodwin had a hole in one on the 5th hole! Congrats to John since I believe that this was the 1st hole in one in Pop Top history. It was encouraging to note that the undergrads also had a foursome in this year’s e tournament. After the golfing, many enjoyed a few pops at the clubhouse and everyone feasted on a large selection of appetizers. Chris Conti, AHC President, gave an update on the the housing situation, and Frank Lee gave an update on the revised RI Beta website. We hope that even more golfers are able to attend this event next year. Please make note that the date will be September 12, 2020, the 1st Saturday after Labor Day at the same course. Thank you, once again, to all the Phi Psi brothers and friends who made this year's Pop Top Open successful!
